Report: Katoa stars as Dolphins jump Roosters into fourth

By Joel Gould

Dolphins halfback Isaiya Katoa returned from NSW camp to star in a 48-10 thrashing of the Sydney Roosters and secure his side’s sixth win in a row.

The Dolphins leapfrogged the Roosters into fourth position and confirmed their credentials as premiership contenders in front of 20,687 fans at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

The Roosters lost debutant centre Reece Foley and five-eighth Hugo Savala to head knocks in the first half. The visitors trailed 12-0 at half-time before the Dolphins put their foot down with six second-half tries.

Both sides were heavily impacted by State of Origin commitments with the Roosters losing seven to NSW and Queensland. Five Dolphins are in camp in Melbourne with the Maroons.

Katoa, who had been on standby for Blues playmaker Mitchell Moses during the week, had his fingerprints all over the win.

His halves partner Kodi Nikorima was also superb, showcasing why he deserves an extension beyond 2026.

The Roosters started full of venom but had a try disallowed to rampaging forward Solesi Foketi for a double movement.

Dolphins co-captain Katoa stepped up with a subtle dummy to deceive opposite number Daly Cherry-Evans to open the scoring.

Dolphins points-scoring whiz Jamayne Isaako, who injured a hand in the final play of the game, converted to equal Canterbury legend Steve Gearin’s all-time premiership record by scoring in his 94th consecutive match.

The kamikaze running of pocket rocket fullback Trai Fuller got the Dolphins roaring up field to start a set that finished with a try out wide to centre Herbie Farnworth, his sixth of the season.

The Roosters lost Foley and Savala in rapid succession to head knocks, both while trying to tackle Isaako.

Roosters debutant winger Rex Bassingthwaighte, just 19, looked every bit the talent he has been touted as with a try, dynamic bursts and all-round nice touches.

The Dolphins started the second half superbly with Katoa and Nikorima combining. Second-rower Oryn Keely split the defence to send Fuller in for his first try of the year.

Katoa’s inch-perfect chip for Nikorima to score his 50th NRL try was scintillating. Hooker Jeremy Marshall-King barged over from close range, Farnworth split the defence to send second-rower Connelly Lemuelu over and winger Tevita Naufahu’s kick inside for utility Brad Schneider was a pearler.

Naufahu’s 100m chase to deny Roosters fullback Cody Ramsey a try revealed the Dolphins’ resolve in defence.

The loss of Savala meant the Roosters had a third debutant in the match with playmaker Toby Rodwell, 20, coming on in the second half and scoring a try to showcase his class.

Full-time: Dolphins leapfrog Roosters on the ladder with huge win

That will be it, the Dolphins don’t make it to 50 points but they won’t mind after thrashing the Roosters tonight. Both teams were missing Origin stars but the Dolphins looked a class above for much of the night.

There is a concern at full-time with Jamayne Isaako down with an injury, but otherwise it was just about a perfect game for the men in red.

Herbie Farnworth, Kodi Nikorima and Isaiya Katoa were terrific, while the Roosters got a first look at a couple of promising rookies and will welcome back a bunch of Origin stars next week.

TRY: Naufahu takes Dolphins within reach of 50

Back to standard programming now as the Dolphins score again, sending the ball through the hands to the left for Herbie Farnworth to send Tevita Naufahu over. The young winger has been great tonight, with a try, a try assist, a great try-saving tackle and four line breaks.

Jamayne Isaako adds the cherry on top with another sideline conversion. The 50-point scoreline is still in play.

TRY: Rodwell becomes second Rooster to score on debut tonight

By

Origin and a couple of head knocks has forced the Roosters into playing several young players tonight, and now two of them have tries on debut, with Toby Rodwell doing very well to shrug his way out of one tackle and hold off another as he reaches out to score.

The headgear-wearing half converts his own try, and the Tricolours at least have a couple of bright signs for the future coming out of this game.

Sensational tackle denies Ramsey 100-metre try

Fantastic stuff now from fill-in fullback Cody Ramsey, who collects a kick inside his in-goal and takes off. He’s out of the in-goal, and suddenly out in the open, bursting clear down the left touchline.

This is a huge run, and he’ll go all the way to the tryline … almost. A sensational chase from Dolphins winger Tevita Naufahu ends with a diving tackle, and it takes Ramsey over the sideline just short of the line. Incredible break, incredible tackle.

If you’ve missed it, check out Ramsey’s backstory – one of the best comebacks in the NRL in recent years.

TRY: Dolphins turn on the style with long-range effort

End-to-end stuff now. The Roosters almost score again when Angus Crichton makes a break but his final pass goes to ground. Then the Dolphins score from 70 metres out, Herbie Farnworth sending Tevita Naufahu clear down the left.

The winger kicks back infield with the outside of his right boot, and it’s a beauty, with bench playmaker Brad Schneider leading the chasers to score with what might be his first touch of the game.

TRY: Roosters winger scores on debut

By

The Roosters finally get a moment of joy as a bomb goes up, finds the ground, and bounces into the path of rookie winger Rex Bassingthwaighte, who grabs the ball and goes over in the corner for a try on debut. The referee thinks he spotted a Billy Smith knock-on from the bomb but the bunker takes a look and gives the Roosters the green light.

The comeback is almost certainly out of reach – especially after 18th man Toby Rodwell’s sideline conversion attempt goes wide – but at least some much-needed points for the away team.

TRY: Farnworth sets up Lemuelu as romp continues

By

It’s a demolition job and now and the Dolphins are queueing up for tries, Herbie Farmworth cutting inside off his left foot to beat a defender and slice through the line, before sending Connolly Lemuelu over.

The Roosters have obviously struggled without seven Origin stars but the Dolphins have five of their own missing and are looking as sharp as ever.
