So I’ll bid you farewell now, and end our live coverage of the World Cup’s opening day. We’ve had one not-amazing game saved by three red cards and drama, followed by a game that wasn’t supposed to be amazing and had no cards at all but was the more enjoyable to watch. I’ll take it.

Join us nice and early again tomorrow for day two of our daily blog, wherein we will hold your hand through Canada v Bosnia-Herzegovina (from 5am AEST) and United States v Paraguay (11am AEST), along with all the latest news, reaction and other relevant tidbits from the tournament.

As always, it’s been a pleasure.

MATCH REPORT: South Korea snatch 2-1 win over Czechia

By

Hwang In-beom and Oh Hyeon-gyu scored second-half goals as South Korea rallied for a 2-1 victory over Czechia in their World Cup opener in Zapopan, Mexico.

Oh’s tie-breaking goal in the 80th minute, off a centering pass from Hwang, gave South Korea three points to leave them level with Mexico in the Group A standings. Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the World Cup opener earlier Thursday.

Kim Seng-gyu had three saves for South Korea, two of them late in the match to preserve the victory.

Ladislav Krejci scored on a header in the 59th minute for Czechia, who were playing their first World Cup match in 20 years. Matej Kovar made four saves for the Czechs, who fell to the bottom of the group standings with two games remaining for each team.

South Korea controlled the run of play in a scoreless first half with an 8-2 advantage in shots. Four of those shots were on target to no avail.

Full-time: South Korea 2-1 Czechia

By

Czechia keep the ball alive for as long as possible after the clock ticks past its designated six minutes of stoppage-time, but that can only last so long. The whistle blows to confirm Korea’s comeback win. They made it difficult for themselves, and it’s a tough pill to swallow for the Czechs, who were at one point looking at a Group A upset.

Six minutes of added time

By

So six minutes for Czechia to conjure a comeback. This has been an exciting game. And my oh my, as I type that the equaliser comes so close to materialising. They opt for route one and the ball ends up with Chytil in the box. The shot is solid and seemingly heading for the back of the net, but for Kim’s reflex dive.

Smart save denied Czechia an equaliser

The shot comes from the boot of Hlozek and it’s rocketing towards the bottom corner, except keeper Kim saves the day with a reflex stop.

Goal! South Korea take the lead

It’s magic for the Koreans, who have climbed from a goal down to a goal in front in 21 minutes courtesy this time of Oh, the substitute who bounces onto Hwang’s cross and prods home.

It’s decidedly less magic for the Czechs who, four minutes earlier, had a goal disallowed for offside. It was another set piece and Soucek this time with the header, but he was caught out by Korea’s defensive line.

South Korea 2-1 after 80 minutes

It’s been a hot one today in the Bay Area

By Vince Rugari

With a top of 31 degrees in Oakland, according to the weather app I’m looking at. But the Socceroos spent weeks in far worse conditions in their pre-World Cup camp in steaming Sarasota, Florida, and players are convinced that is going to hold them in good stead. They genuinely believe they will be the fittest team at this tournament.

“I think based on our friendlies, I don’t think you can say it’s a false statement,” said Jacob Italiano. “I think we showed that against very good sides that we can push them all the way to the end. We can kind of change momentum in a game when they might feel like they’re on top, we can flick the switch.

“And at any moment in the game, especially in the second half of these games, we kind of change momentum. Once they tire, we’ve still got a lot left in us. It’s definitely a strength of ours.”

Aziz Behich added: “I you look at the two games against Mexico and Switzerland, we were running them at the end of the game, so that should give us a hell of a lot of confidence going into these games in the group stage.”

Even considering the temperature, it probably wasn’t hot enough on Thursday (local time) to trigger a ‘hydration break’ under normal rules – but, of course, FIFA is mandating them at this World Cup. Socceroos players gathered to watch Mexico v South Africa, the tournament opener, earlier today, which was the first official match to have them.

Goal! South Korea equalise quick smart

By

It comes eight minutes after the opener, and after a flurry of substitutions. Straight after Czechia scored, Hwang Hee-chan is introduced in place of Lee Jae-sung. Then Czechia bring on Adam Hlozek, Michael Sadilek and two-metre man Tomas Chory, who relieve Sulc, Schick and Provod – a straight swap of the front line, basically.

Three minutes after that – right when you’re thinking South Korea were too wasteful and are on the back foot here – in comes a ball for Hwang In-beom. He glides into the box, looks about to shoot, then switches direction to lose a trio of defenders and places a delicate finish exactly where he wants it.

Goal! Czechia open the scoring

By

Let’s just say that’s against the run of play. Let’s also just say that I was midway through typing a sentence about how South Korea were stamping their authority on this game and had to have a goal coming soon.

Since half-time they have dominated possession, and Kovar has made a double save and then another to deny Son again. With 12 shots to Czechia’s three and five of those on target to Czechia’s none, this was South Korea’s to either seize or throw away.

But no no no, say Czechia when they take a throw from the right, just about in line with the top of the area. And no no no, says Krejci, who is running onto it and connecting with it and heading it straight into Kim’s net.
