Thank you for joining us!

We’re wrapping up our coverage of the second day of the World Cup. The morning began with a draw in Toronto between co-host Canada, who had never not lost a Cup match before this one, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. There was a duck dressed in a Mexican jersey and Scottish fans in between, and then we capped the day with the USA’s dominant 4-1 win over Paraguay.

We’ll return tomorrow with four matches, including the Socceroos’ debut against Turkey at 2pm AEST.

Until then, make sure to do your homework and check out Vince Rugari’s Good Weekend profile of Socceroos young talent Nestory Irankunda. As Vince writes, if you’ve never heard Irankunda’s name before, now is the time to learn it.

See you tomorrow!

Popovic well aware everyone has written off the Socceroos

By Nick Ralston

The comments from Cahlangolu are the continuation of a storyline that began the moment the World Cup draw was made and US pundits laughed off any suggestion the Socceroos would pose any sort of threat.

Popovic said his attention has always been on the Socceroos and what they are capable of and what they can control.

“We focused on ourselves, and our focus has really been on how we can prepare, how we can be the best we can be here at the World Cup,” he said.

“We understand that not many people are expecting much from us outside of our own people, our own media, our own team, our own staff, but you know we’re accustomed to that, but we’re confident that we can show them some great football tomorrow, and show them what Australian football can do.”

Cleary the Australians have decided to hold their tongues and do their talking on the BC Stadium pitch (which looks incredible, by the way). My colleague Vince Rugari has offered Aiden O’Neill the chance to fire back at Calhanoglu in the press conference, but he’s let that opportunity go through to the keeper.

“You know he’s allowed his own opinion,” O’Neill said. “We’ve got quality players in our team too, so yeah, we’re ready for tomorrow, and ... we’re extremely excited.”

MATCH REPORT: Folarin Balogun’s brace sends US to World Cup-opening rout

By

The US waited 32 years to play a World Cup match on home soil, and the performance met the anticipation as Folarin Balogun scored two first-half goals in a 4-1 win over Paraguay in the Group D opener on Friday at Los Angeles Stadium.

After a seventh-minute own goal put the US in front, Balogun scored in the 31st minute and the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time to give the hosts a 3-0 lead at the break.

Mauricio got a goal back for Paraguay in the 73rd minute, but Gio Reyna capped the match with a brilliant outside-of-the-boot strike deep in second-half stoppage time.

Balogun is the first US player to score several goals in a World Cup match since Bert Patenaude had three in a 3-0 win over Paraguay during the first edition of the event in 1930. The same match was the last time the USMNT earned a World Cup victory by at least three goals.

Popovic says Socceroos are in Vancouver to ‘spoil the party’

By Nick Ralston

Australian coach Tony Popovic and midfielder Aiden O’Neill spoke in the press room at BC Stadium ahead of tomorrow’s match in Vancouver and unsurprisingly the early questions are around comments from Turkish captain Hakan Calhanoglu, who has declared his side will dominate the opening game because they are more talented.

Popovic has taken the diplomatic option and says that Calhanoglu has the right to his opinion.

“They expect to win, but so do most people, they expect they will beat Australia tomorrow, so that’s no different,” Popovic said. “All we can do is try and spoil the party, that’s our challenge tomorrow, and that’s what we have to do.”

He’s singled out Calhanoglu as one player Australia will have to watch but would not be drawn more specifically on their opponents’ strengths.

“They’re very strong individually and collectively,” he said. “They’ve shown recently how strong they were in the Euros ... I know that every Turkish supporter and fan is very excited to be at the World Cup, we know they are strong, we’ve analysed them.

“But we also have to think of ourselves and think how we can cause them problems and show Australian football at the World Cup.”

REYNA SEALS US VICTORY

By

Just as the clock was winding down in the final minute of stoppage time, late substitute Giovanni Reyna has scored a fourth and final goal – the first time the US has ever scored four goals in a World Cup match.

He hits it with the outside of his right foot, curling it beyond Paraguay’s reach.

What a finish for the host nation in their opening match!

Sixth yellow card of the match

Junior Alonso is shown a yellow card for a foul on Adams. That’s the fifth card for Paraguay and the sixth for the match.

Andres Cubas is being treated on the pitch for what looks like an injured shoulder.

The US search for historic fourth goal

By

The US is pushing the tempo back up, the commentators have just told us they have never scored four goals in a World Cup match. Riccardo Pepi hunts for it but his shot on goal is too high. Berhalter also has a go from afar but misses too.

There will be seven minutes of stoppage time.
