Report: Faalogo steers Storm to crucial win over Roosters

By Melissa Woods

Fleet-footed Storm fullback Sua Faalogo has helped run the Sydney Roosters ragged to bank a much-needed 18-4 win in Melbourne.

With six players backing up from State of Origin including James Tedesco and Sam Walker in their Saturday night match at AAMI Park, the Roosters couldn’t hold back their desperate hosts.

While Faalogo missed out on scoring one of Melbourne’s three tries, the 23-year-old clocked up a game-high 301 run metres including three line breaks, and took over the Storm’s goal-kicking after an injury to Nick Meaney.

He also pulled off a try-saving tackle on Cody Ramsey in the second half, continuing to prove himself a shining light in Melbourne’s lack-lustre season.

While the home side, who had three players back on deck after Origin I, did enough to secure their fifth win, it wasn’t pretty at times.

In the first half they completed 24 of 25 sets, but it took until the 25th minute before they were finally able to penetrate the Roosters’ defence.

Returning from the Origin arena via the bench, Storm skipper Harry Grant burrowed over from dummy-half.

Roosters winger Billy Smith got his team on the board 10 minutes later as the visitors worked the ball wide and the teams went into halftime with Melbourne up 6-4.

Forced to make 34 more tackles than the Storm, the workload took its toll on the leg-weary Sydneysiders.

After Melbourne playmaker Cameron Munster shunted the ball free of Walker, Faalogo scooped up the ball five metres from the tryline and dashed downfield.

While he was run down by Ramsey, Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes noted the Roosters defence lagging and put up a kick for Will Warbrick to score an easy try.

Melbourne’s other winger Moses Leo also got his own four-pointer with another long-range effort after taking a Daly Cherry-Evans’ bomb.

That cemented the Storm’s win over the third-placed Roosters, who have now lost their last two matches.

Full-time: Walker binned, Faalogo adds another two to round out good win

Frustration is boiling over for Siua Wong now, as he’s penalised for picking up Cameron Munster and slamming him down in a tackle, after the Storm freely gave away a couple of set restarts by lying in the tackle when defending their own end.

Errors are really creeping into the game in the final moments, with the game effectively out of reach for the visitors.

One last long line break from Sua Faalogo gives the Storm fans a final highlight, and there are some bronx cheers as Sam Walker is sent to the sin bin for a professional foul as the final seconds tick down on the clock. Faalogo kicks another penalty goal after the final buzzer following Walker’s sin-binning.

It’s just the fifth win of the season for Melbourne, and their third since round two, while the Roosters now have back-to-back losses after a run of six straight wins.

Faalogo try-saver denies Ramsey; Wong put on report

The Roosters get a rare attacking foray into Melbourne territory, and James Tedesco flings a pass to Cody Ramsey on the right – but when the winger dives for the corner he’s taken over the sideline by a brilliant Sua Faalogo cover tackle.

Cameron Munster complains of a hair pull by Roosters forward Siua Wong – not something you see every day – and while Wong isn’t penalised there he does cough up possession after spilling a Daly Cherry-Evans short ball the next set.

The error count tonight is 14-7 against the Roosters, and Wong is now placed on report for the hair pull as well. It just hasn’t been the Tricolours’ night.

TRY: Leo goes long as Storm open up big lead at last

By

Points have been so hard to come by for Melbourne tonight that it’s a genuine shock when Moses Leo outleaps Robert Toia to take a bomb at his own end, looks up to see nobody in front of him, and runs the length of the field to score. It comes a minute after Roosters winger Cody Ramsey had his leg twisted awkwardly in a tackle, and he wasn’t up to chasing Leo when the Storm speedster burst clear.

Sua Faalogo’s mixed night from the tee continues with another missed conversion attempt, but the 12-point scoreline looks like a big one on a night like this.

Faalogo penalty goal edges Storm eight points clear

Billy Smith puts down a Jahrome Hughes bomb, and Salesi Foketi grabs the ball from an offside position, so Sua Faalogo steps up to take a penalty goal and give Melbourne an eight-point buffer.

TRY: Hughes sets up Warbrick after Faalogo break

The game is starting to open up a little now. The Roosters go through the hands down the left and Hugo Savala does superbly well to pop an offload to Billy Smith, before Sam Walker’s last-tackle grubber is cleaned up by the impressive Sua Faalogo.

Then the Storm make a break down the opposite flank through Moses Leo, but his grubber kick for himself trickles over the sideline.

There are more fireworks a couple of minutes later when Faalogo picks up the loose ball from a kick and bursts clear through the middle, only to be chased down by Cody Ramsey. Then Jahrome Hughes kicks across-field to Will Wabrick who scores untouched out wide.

But with Nick Meaney sidelined, Faalogo’s conversion attempt goes wide and the Roosters only trail by six.

Howarth denied by bunker as Roosters defence comes up trumps again

By

An error in the play-the-ball from Will Warbrick gives the Roosters a scrum feed inside Melbourne’s 40 metres, but the Roosters are penalised when Nat Butcher runs into a Melbourne defender off the ball.

The Storm get the first real attacking chance of the half after a Cody Ramsey mistake and Jack Howarth slides over the tryline out wide on the left, but Robert Toia and James Tedesco get their arms under the ball. The on-field referee awards the try but the bunker overrules it.

Second half kicks off

We’re on for the final 40 minutes, after a bit of a strange first half. The Storm did all the little things right, controlled the ball well in the wet, and dominated possession and territory. The Roosters tackled their hearts out. Somehow, that led to a 6-4 half-time scoreline, and it’s obviously anyone’s game from here.

Will the fatigue take its toll on the Roosters or will frustration boil over for Melbourne?

The Roosters start the half with a strong defensive set, Jahrome Hughes getting his clearing kick away just 35 metres from his own tryline.
