Dearden injured as Moses strikes gold for Eels in nail-biter

By Sebastian Tan

Mitch Moses stepped up in Parramatta’s moment of need to consign a wasteful North Queensland to a 33-30 golden-point defeat in Townsville.

Adding more pain to the Cowboys and Queensland, halfback Tom Dearden was injured in a tackle and limped off the field just weeks before State of Origin kicks off on May 27.

On a night when Jason Taumalolo became the most-capped Cowboy (295 games), the Eels never shied away from the emotionally charged NRL fixture at Queensland Country Bank Stadium on Friday.

Leading by eight points with 10 minutes remaining, the Cowboys were in the box seat to seal their seventh victory in eight games.

But Parramatta flicked a switch as Jordan Samrani crossed in the 75th minute, before Moses orchestrated a try for Joash Papalii to level the scores.

Moses missed the conversion attempt and then a two-point field goal to seal victory.

But with the game going into golden point, the halfback kept his cool to slot the winning field goal before a penalty in the lead-up meant the Eels secured another two points.

Victory came as Parramatta were without starting hooker Ryley Smith (sternum injury), centre Will Penisini (osteitis pubis), and Jonah Pezet (suspension).

But North Queensland coughed up a mammoth 17 errors to keep the door ajar for Parramatta, who picked up their second win in seven games.

Not only will the Cowboys hope Dearden can recover after he was left clutching his ankle, but Soni Luke also left the field early after his knee buckled under a tackle from prop Junior Paulo.

Regardless, Dearden provided a State of Origin preview for Maroons supporters, assisting in three tries, while hooker Reed Mahoney made a game-high 47 tackles.

It took just over two minutes for the first try, when Samrani capitalised on a kick, and the Eels moved right to find Brian Kelly in the corner.

The home team hit back when Dearden dispatched a short ball to the barnstorming second-rower Heilum Luki.

Parramatta crossed next when Tallyn Da Silva picked up the ball and scuttled over the line, but the Cowboys responded through the newly re-signed Jake Clifford in the 30th minute.

Trailing 12-10, Parramatta capitalised on a North Queensland error when Ronald Volkman poked a grubber through to a diving Josh Addo-Carr.

But centre Tom Chester went on a blistering run before young gun Jaxon Purdue produced some fancy footwork to re-establish the Cowboys’ lead.

Minutes later, Luki pierced through a gap and handed the ball off to Dearden, who threw it to a running Mahoney, and he strolled over untouched.

Addo-Carr crossed for his second when he picked off a Dearden pass, but Chester (228 metres) grabbed a much-deserved four-pointer to inch the Cowboys ahead again.

That wasn’t the end of the drama, though, as Samrani stormed over before the centre handed off a ball down the right flank to Papalii to level scores.

Clifford thought he had scored the game-winning field goal, but it was touched, before Moses’ attempt was charged down, sending the match into golden point.

The Parramatta halfback stayed composed to guide home the match-clinching field goal.

GAME OVER: Dearden off as golden point begins – and Moses wins it

By

The start of extra time brings two new interchanges for each team and the Cowboys immediately use one to finally substitute their injured halfback Tom Dearden. Whatever the result here, that could be bad news for Queensland’s Origin campaign.

The Cowboys kick off extra time, and the Eels take it out of their own end.

Ronald Volkman, who has been excellent at five-eighth, makes another line break down the left edge, and Parramatta have their chance.

Mitchell Moses steps up, and slots it. Eels win! That’s a huge result for the underdogs.

But wait – the game isn’t over? The Eels also receive a penalty for Scott Drinkwater making contact with Moses’ legs while he kicked the field goal. Parramatta get a penalty goal right in front.

Field goal chaos, big charge-downs from Paulo, Mahoney as 80 minutes is up

Neither defence has been particularly sturdy tonight so surely we get at least one field goal attempt before full-time. The problem for the Cowboys is one of their go-to men, Tom Dearden, is clearly not fully fit.

But fortunately they have a couple of others. One – Jake Clifford – takes a long-range effort, that is touched by Junior Paulo, and it hits the post. A game-saving play by Paulo there.

The Cowboys get the ball back from the resulting drop goal, but there’s an error from Tom Mikaele! There might have been a hand in there from Jack Williams, but the Eels won’t care.

They get one final shot at a field goal from Mitchell Moses – and it’s charged down by Reed Mahoney! It’s all happening, and we’ll go into golden point extra time.

TRY: Eels go long to tie up the game!

Wow. Mitch Moses sets up a short-side raid around halfway and Jordan Samrani bursts down the right touchline, drifts inside and finds Joash Papalii looping behind him. Papalii runs to the tryline and dives over in the corner.

Moses would’ve liked Papalii to have scored just about anywhere else, but the scores are level.

Can the Eels No.7 slot the conversion and give his team the lead in the final minutes?

No. It misses the left post by a few centimetres.

TRY: Eels strike again to set up late nail-biter

Tom Dearden is playing injured here with the Cowboys all out of interchanges – they used up their last when Soni Luke went off injured with about 13 minutes left. Dearden has packed into a scrum in order to avoid having to defend in the backline.

The Eels win that scrum and start punching holes in the North Queensland defence, with Ronald Volkman running past Dearden. Mitch Moses throws a wild pass, Eels prop Luca Moretti dives on it, and the Cowboys defence is bunched in the middle of the field in front of their goal posts.

So Parra take advantage and send it wide, right centre Jordan Samrani getting the ball in some space and cutting back inside to score.

This one’s going right down to the wire.

TRY: Chester runs away again to give Cowboys a buffer

Another big break for the Cowboys out of their own half in the middle of the park, Jake Clifford trotting through a yawning gap in the middle of the Eels’ defensive line and linking up with Tom Chester. The speedy centre appears to be brought down by Joash Papalii, but he’s not held, so gets up and gets his way to the tryline.

Clifford converts and it’s an eight-point advantage to the Cowboys. Will it be enough?

Dearden hurt after going close to another try

By

A big moment now as Jason Taumalolo makes a huge run before offloading for Scott Drinkwater, who sends Tom Dearden darting towards the tryline. He goes close, but is brought down by a tackle from behind by Joash Papalii and Josh Addo-Carr. The tackle leaves Dearden writhing in pain, and replays suggest it might be a hip drop tackle. But the Maroons halfback gets up and plays on, and there’s no ruling against the Eels.

In the Eels’ next set Ronald Volkman shows and goes before chipping over the top, and Dearden is the man on the spot to take the kick. He’s clearly not 100 per cent but he’s playing on and getting the job done so far.
