Manly’s big win over Broncos soured by cruel blow to veteran prop

By Scott Bailey

Manly veteran Siua Taukeiaho faces a fight to continue his NRL career after the two-time premiership winner was taken to hospital with a suspected lower-leg fracture.

On a night where teenage halfback Joey Walsh again showed why he is a star of the future, the Sea Eagles’ oldest player suffered a devastating blow when scoring a try in the 32-4 win over Brisbane.

Charging onto a ball from close to the line after half-time, Taukeiaho’s leg twisted beneath two Broncos defenders as he fought to get the ball down.

The off-contract 34-year-old was given the pain-relieving green whistle as he lay stricken on the ground, before being stretchered off the field in a medicab.

Taukeiaho’s injury soured what was an otherwise brilliant Saturday night for Manly at Brookvale Oval, who have now won five of six matches since Kieran Foran took over as coach.

Albeit against a depleted Broncos who were wasteful with most of their attacking opportunities, Manly’s defence had real punch and physicality.

Haumole Olakau’atu spent 80 minutes whacking visiting players, at one stage flattening Reece Walsh in a moment that summed up the second half.

So much has Manly’s defence improved, they have now conceded 82 points in six games under Foran compared to 98 in the first three matches before Anthony Seibiold was sacked.

In attack, the Sea Eagles are clicking and now entrenched in the NRL’s top eight.

Starting for just the second time in the NRL, Joey Walsh scored Manly’s first try when he ran through a gaping hole from close distance.

He also kicked a massive first-half 40-20, and helped the Sea Eagles regain possession at a crucial point in the first half with a pinpoint perfect short dropout.

Tolu Koula was a threat after being moved back to left centre, while five-eighth Luke Brooks is playing as well now as any point since he joined Manly in 2024.

Brooks helped lay on one try, when he ran it on the last and went short side before the much-improved Brandon Wakeham sent Hopoate over.

And Koula also finished the night with a try, when Wakeham chipped ahead for stand-in fullback Clayton Faualalo, who found Koula on the inside to score.

Brisbane, in comparison, were ordinary.

Even with more than 10 players out through injury, there was little excuse for their poor handling in attack.

The defending premiers squandered almost every good opportunity, with their only points coming from a Walsh cut-out ball for winger Antonio Verhoeven early in the match.

But they completed at just 47 per cent in an error-riddled second half, leaving them with only two tackles in Manly’s 20-metre zone.

TRY: Garrick caps big victory for Sea Eagles

By

It’s become very scrappy in the final stages of this game but it looks like Manly have come up with another try when prop Ethan Bullemor finds himself in space and runs through untouched to the tryline – but the referee blows a penalty for obstruction before Bullemor gets there and it’s penalty Broncos.

More bad news for Brisbane now as Jack Gosiewski cops a nasty head knock – he’s copped a cut to the back of the head and stayed down initially, suggesting he’ll probably be out of action next week as well.

There’s time for one last attacking foray for Manly, with Luke Brooks sending Tolu Koula bursting down the left. He’s covered by the Brisbane cover defence, but a couple of tackles later Reuben Garrick runs it from dummy half, hits the defence, spins and reaches out to score. He lands the conversion after the final siren as the cherry on top.

Errors pile up for under-strength Broncos

Brisbane now have 15 errors tonight and their completion rate has fallen below 60 per cent – in this year’s NRL when possession matters more than ever, you can’t win with those numbers.

But they produce some nice play in attack now, Ezra Mam grabbing a loose ball and taking off down the left, then Reece Walsh kicking ahead and Ben Hunt chasing to force a goal-line dropout.

But the dropout from Luke Brooks goes straight into the arms of Brisbane winger Josiah Karapani – who drops it. It’s been that kind of night.

TRY: Wakeham chips for long-range Koula try

The errors are starting to stack up now – Brisbane’s Aublix Tawha, then Taniela Paseka for Manly, then Tawha is penalised for a lifting tackle, then Jason Saab spills yet another bomb from Joey Walsh.

Brisbane haven’t had a tackle inside Manly’s 20 metres in the second half and don’t really look like closing the gap at this stage, and their scrappiness in attack reflects how many players they’re missing through injury tonight.

And then – bang. The Sea Eagles conjure a genuine highlight.

Tawha pops an offload to Reece Walsh, who drops it, Brandon Wakeham grabs it for Manly and puts up an audacious chip kick inside his own 30 metres. Clayton Faulalo grabs it, and passes to the lightning quick Tolu Koula – who has switched back from fullback to left centre tonight – and he runs clear, scoring in the left corner.

Reuben Garrick misses a conversion at last but this contest is pretty much over.

Manly’s bomb-to-Saab plan almost pays off again

By

Give the Sea Eagles credit, they’re sticking to the game plan, and Joey Walsh bombs yet again in Jason Saab’s direction. The towering winger bats the ball back to Haumole Olakau’atu, who charges towards the tryline, Brisbane defenders hanging of him. Finally Olakau’atu offloads as he’s brought to ground just short, but the ball pops into the hands of a Bronco and they’re off the hook.

Taukeiaho headed to hospital with leg injury

By

An ambulance has been called for Siosiua Taukeiaho who has suffered a serious lower leg injury, the veteran forward cheered by the crowd as he’s stretchered from the field. It’s a sombre moment for the 34-year-old former Roosters, New Zealand and Tonga forward.

Meanwhile Reuben Garrick knocks over the conversion and Taukeiaho’s try has his team well in control.

TRY: Manly dominance continues as Taukeiaho cracks Broncos defence

By

Manly have the first attacking raid of the second half, Joey Walsh bombing for Jason Saab, who takes it but is wrapped up by swarming Broncos defenders and can’t get an offload away.

Strangely, that was only the fourth tackle, so Manly send it wide to the left on the last and they almost score but Jesse Arthars gets his hand to a pass and halts the play.

But from the resulting scrum the Sea Eagles crack them this time, Siosiua Taukeiaho dragging a couple of defenders over the line beside the posts. He’s injured himself doing it, with a trainer checking on his lower leg and the stretcher coming onto the field following the try. The conversion is still to come.

Second half underway

By

The teams are back out there for the second half, Manly enjoying a 12-point lead after dominating that first 40 minutes.

But with the Broncos making a habit of big second-half fightbacks in the past couple of years, don’t write off Reece Walsh and co just yet.

The visitors do have an advantage in these first couple of minutes with Brandon Wakeham still in the sin bin for Manly.
