Report: Burton runs wild as Bulldogs chase down Storm to snap losing streak

By Christian Nicolussi

Bulldogs supremo Phil Gould spoke about Matt Burton on a podcast this week and how there was no chance of him running off “in the middle of the night” to sign with another club before his contract expires.

But running off in the middle of the night is exactly what Burton did against the Melbourne Storm on Friday night.

Burton ran and ran against the Storm as he and rookie forward Jack Underhill inspired a much-needed victory for the Dogs.

They were facing a sixth straight loss, and basically needed the 30-20 victory to lift the spirits.

The five-eighth is renowned for having one of the most lethal left boots in the competition, but based on his efforts in the middle of Accor Stadium, expect to see Burton given full licence to start running the ball in attack.

You have to wonder why Burton had not poured more energy into running the ball. For a big man, he has a serious turn of foot.

Canterbury football manager Phil Gould went on a mini publicity tour this week to try and take some of the heat off the Dogs. A loss to Melbourne would have all but killed off their finals aspirations in May.

Burton is one storyline given he is off contract at the end of 2027, and there has been constant speculation he is free to leave at the end of the year. Parramatta would love a crack if he gets permission to negotiate, but that’s another story.

If Burton was excellent, so was Underhill, the Sunshine Coast kid who debuted at Magic Round, and had some memorable moments against Melbourne.

His shot on Alec MacDonald to force the ball free late in the first half lifted the spirits of the players and the crowd. Melbourne led 18-6 at the time, and another try could have sealed the result.

Underhill then came up with a charge-down on a Jahrome Hughes kick, and regathered the ball, which allowed the Dogs to continue attacking with the game on the line. He was given a rockstar reception when he came from the field, was asked to return to play the ball, only to run off a second time to another deafening roar of approval.

The strawberry blond hair will evoke memories of Bulldogs forwards James Graham and Aidan Tolman.

It was not all great news for Canterbury who lost Jacob Preston to a fractured forearm after 10 minutes, with the back-rower staying on the field to make a couple of tackles, only to succumb to the pain.

The Storm had their chances, and led 10-0 after almost as many minutes with Moses Leo bagging a double. His first try featured him brushing off some soft defence from Marcelo Montoya and Jacob Kiraz, who returned from a knee injury, and was thrust straight into fullback once Connor Tracey was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

When a diving Kiraz tried to keep a Hughes 40-20 attempt from going into touch, Leo was able to scoop up the ball and score untouched.

The Dogs will look to build next Saturday against Wests Tigers, who have some of their stars returning, including Api Koroisau and one-time Dogs target Jahream Bula.

Melbourne host the Roosters, but do get back Queensland Origin star duo Cameron Munster and Harry Grant.

Full-time: Bulldogs snap losing streak with strong comeback win

And that’s it. The Bulldogs’ five-game losing streak is over, and they’ve earned a much-needed victory with a strong second-half performance. It takes some pressure off after a very rough period for the club. Matt Burton was the star in the second half, and Bronson Xerri was a standout down the left edge. Jack Underhill also made a name for himself with a few big plays including a crunching first-half hit.

TRY: Kiraz scores after Faalogo spills bomb to win it for Bulldogs

By

Sua Faalogo has been excellent under the high ball tonight for Melbourne but this time he goes up for a Lachie Galvin bomb and can’t bring it down, falling awkwardly as the ball bursts out of his hands. It’s a golden chance for the Bulldogs to wrap this game up, and they take it – stand-in fullback runs it against the tiring defence and breaks through for the try.

Canterbury’s losing streak is over.

Bulldogs’ survive scare with captain’s challenge

By

A big call now as Enari Tuala is penalised for tackling out Will Warbrick as he chases an attacking kick, and the Bulldogs immediately challenge it. If this goes Melbourne’s way they’ll have possession inside the Dogs’ 20 metres, trailing by four points with four minutes left.

The commentators on Nine and Fox Sports all agree it’s not worthy of a penalty, and the bunker agrees. Captain’s challenge is successful, the crowd at Accor Stadium cheers, and the Bulldogs come away with it out of their own end.

TRY: Bulldogs hit the lead after Warbrick error

By

The Dogs lead! The home side has been dominating this second half, with Lachie Galvin forcing a dropout when Will Warbrick cleans up a grubber in the in-goal. But now Warbrick makes an error coming out of his own line and it’s a very costly one, the Jaeman Salmon picking up the loose ball and sending it left for Jethro Rinakama to score his second try of the night.

Matt Burton takes a long time for his conversion attempt and eventually misses it.

Young prop Underhill become a Dogs crowd favourite

By

Sua Faalogo does well to bring down a bomb under prenty of pressure and immediately cops a big tackle from Marcelo Montoya. He manages to keep possession in the tackle but Will Warbrick doesn’t a few tackles later, with the Bulldogs defence swarming in numbers. The crowd lifts but the Dogs take the pressure off when Jack Underhill is ruled to have knocked on in the tackle.

But Underhill makes up for that error quickly with a charge down, and he chases the ball down and beats Jahrome Hughes to it to regain possession. The young prop is quickly becoming a new crowd favourite. He’s subbed off now after an excellent stint.

GOAL: Burton equalises as Bulldogs take momentum into final stages

By

It’s all Canterbury now. Jacob Kiraz gets an offload away, the ball goes left and Matt Burton slices through the defence again. He’s making line breaks for fun in this second half. Sua Faalogo brings him down, and the next play Max King of all people puts up a bomb for the corner – it’s defused by the Storm but Melbourne was already offside and give away penalty. Burton lands the penalty and it’s all square at Accor Stadium.

The Dogs have the momentum. Can they go on and win it, and end this five-game losing streak?

TRY: Burton break sets up Rinakama try

By

Matt Burton is having a strong second half, and after taking a pass from the equally impressive Bronson Xerri he slices through down the middle of the park to take the Bulldogs within 10 metres. A quick play-the-ball follows and the Bulldogs send it left, with rookie Jethro Rinakama going over untouched on the wing.

Burton converts and it’s a close game once more.

Storm lose Blore but extend lead with penalty goal

By

The Storm have lost Shawn Blore to a failed HIA and it looks like it’s going to be more bad news when Marcelo Montoya crosses the line out wide, but Sua Faalogo does superbly well to hold the winger up over the line.

That’s a turnover and the Storm hold onto the lead with half an bour left.

Then there’s one of those nitpicky penalties as Jahrome Hughes gets a kick away – Matt Burton makes contact with him as he makes the kick, if not before, but is penalised for a late tackle. The Storm take the simple penalty shot from right in front and it’s an eight-point lead.
