Christopher Pyne has said the Liberal party is going to have to look at adopting quotas to get more women into Parliament.

Female teal independents clinched key Liberal seats including Kooyong, Goldstein, Warringah, Mackellar, North Sydney and Wentworth.

Pyne told 7 there was a clear message from the Liberals’ defeat.

“The Liberal Party can’t afford to lose women. We don’t have enough women,” Pyne said.

“We’re going to have to start looking at quotas. We’re going to have to start facing the reality.”

”You heard it here first, it’s a swear word for the Liberal Party” said Labor Senator and fellow panellist Katy Gallagher quipped.

Labor frontbencher Tanya Plibersek says a win is a win, despite Labor’s weakened primary vote at this election.

Labor’s primary is two per cent lower than it was at the last election as voters who rejected Scott Morrison favoured the Greens and independents.

But Plibersek told the ABC that “a win is a win is a win”.

“I don’t think anybody is complaining about the primary vote ... I think this is a really strong signal that people in city areas, in regional communities, right across Australia are up for strong action on climate change.”

As it’s just past midnight, vote-counting has now ceased for the day.

So we still don’t know if Labor will form government in its own right or will need to rely on crossbench votes.

Just in from Downing Street, Boris Johnson has become the first world leader to congratulate Anthony Albanese.
