WA minister defends EPAs’ decision on Burswood racetrack

By Hamish Hastie

Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn has mounted a strident defence of the Environmental Protection Authority’s decision to not formally assess his government’s Burswood racetrack and amphitheatre plan as part of the $217.5 million Perth Park project.

The authority decided against assessing the project in November, which was met with outcry from its opponents.

Speaking at a Committee for Economic Development Australia lunch in King’s Park today, Swinbourn hit out at that criticism and criticism of another project the EPA recently recommended for approval, the Gnarabup resort and beach village.

“Recent commentary on decisions by the EPA has been concerning both in its confidence in being on the right side of the argument, and at times its distance from the facts,” he said.

“The damage is severe, it’s quite confronting to see whole crops that have been put to waste overnight through this weather event,” he said.

Federal assistant minister for emergency management, Josh Wilson, joined the Premier, and said a visit to some local farmers this morning had revealed up to 70 to 80 per cent of their fruit crops were gone.

“People have been put through the wringer of a fierce cyclone, the second-strongest cyclone after Vance in most people’s lifetime around here,” he said.

“It’s really harmful to all parts of life – households, local governments, community services and businesses here in Carnarvon, particularly pastoralists, crop growers and banana producers.

Emergency relief grants of up to $4000 have already begun to be processed for those in town impacted by the cyclone, or the flooding it caused in its wake.
