WA CME warns of driving mining investment to countries with ‘weaker environmental standards’

By

Western Australia’s peak resources advocacy group has weighed in on the release of a new report demanding urgent action to turn the tide on the state’s “biodiversity crisis”.

The Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA responded to the Back from the Brink report, released by the Conservation Council of WA on Thursday, to defend the environmental performance of the state’s mining sector.

The report takes particular aim at the clearing of native vegetation in the state’s north, with CCWA executive director Matt Roberts warning “huge tracts of land” in the Pilbara was often overlooked.

“When we hear that we need some sort of fast-tracking system for industry, what we’re seeing is there are no brakes being applied to the clearing in this state,” he said.

Fremantle defender Brennan Cox is in line to be given a well-earned rest this week, while the Dockers are also keen to play it safe with ruckman Sean Darcy and midfielder Jaeger O’Meara.

The Dockers (11-1) are on top of the AFL ladder and riding a club-record 11-match winning streak heading into Saturday’s clash with North Melbourne in the country town of Bunbury, 175 kilometres south of Perth.

Although Caleb Serong will miss a third straight game with a calf injury, Fremantle are set to be boosted by the return of fellow star midfielder Hayden Young from concussion.

Matthew Johnson (hamstring) has also been cleared to play after suffering a scare in last week’s 25-point win over Brisbane.

WA government mulls medicinal cannabis law reform for drivers

By

Taking you back to our earlier post for a moment, where WA was urged to follow in NSW’s footsteps and introduce a medical defence for drivers caught with cannabis in their system.

Police Minister Reece Whitby was asked about the issue at a press conference this morning, and his response may give hope to advocates, such as Legalise Cannabis WA’s Dr Brian Walker, who described current legislation left the state “isolated, outdated, and scientifically embarrassed”.

Whitby said the WA government supported the principle of a medical defence “in circumstances where a driver is using medicinal, prescribed cannabis”.

“So it has to be prescribed by a medical professional, and I think in those circumstances where there’s no issue of impairment of driver ability, we’re looking at how we give a medical defence for that substance being detected,” he said.

WA urged to follow in NSW’s footsteps in cannabis driving law reform

By

Western Australia is being urged to follow the lead of New South Wales and overhaul laws for drivers caught with cannabis in their system.

Under the reforms, drivers in NSW who have lawful cannabis prescriptions will have a medical defence and be subject to a three-strike impairment test.

If they test positive, they will be barred from driving for 24 hours while their samples are analysed. The reforms see NSW join Tasmania as the only two Australian states with medical defence models.

Dr Brian Walker, who sits in WA’s upper house for the Legalise Cannabis party, said the model should be replicated in the west, where current legislation left the state increasingly “isolated, outdated, and scientifically embarrassed”.

Insurer counts the cost of WA mega-storm

By

More than 7000 claims have been lodged with RAC in the aftermath of the severe storm that lashed Perth and southern WA at the weekend.

It means the weekend’s weather chaos resulted in almost one-third of the 24,000 storm-related claims RAC received in 2025.

The insurer’s home assessing manager Glen Walker described it as “one of the most significant storm events we’ve experienced in recent memory”.

Fences and gates, ceilings, roofs and patios were the most common items damaged as the system hit WA.

Walker urged homeowners to make sure their properties were prepared before the next storm hit.

“It’s critical that debris such as fallen tree branches and other damaged items are cleaned up as soon as possible,” he said.

Four-year-old girl killed in Canning Vale crash

By

WA Police’s major crash team is investigating after a young girl was killed in a crash in Perth’s south-east on Wednesday afternoon.

The four-year-old was the passenger in a Holden Astra which was involved in a collision with a Ford Mustang at the intersection of Boardman Road and Garden Street in Canning Vale.

The 32-year-old woman driving the Astra, the four-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy who was also a passenger were rushed to Fiona Stanley Hospital, however the young girl later died from her injuries.

A WA Police spokesperson said the 29-year-old woman driving the Mustang sustained minor injuries.

Police are urging anyone who saw the crash or with information about it to contact Crime Stoppers.

Daring beach rescue as ‘record storm’ smashed WA coast

By

Details have emerged of a daring police rescue in Lake Clifton as the mega-storm that lashed WA’s coast bore down on the weekend.

Eight people and a dog had become stranded on a beach at the popular coastal enclave south of Mandurah on Sunday afternoon, with police called about 1.30pm when rising swell and high tides cut access to the group’s campsite.

They had been camping in the area in three four-wheel-drives but were unable to leave as the system – later described as a “record storm event” only seen about once every five years – swept in.

The group’s food and water supplies were exhausted, while they had also run out of fuel as they attempted to rescue themselves.
