Hewett, the No.14 pick from the 2022 national draft, comes out of contract at the end of this season and is being sounded out by several Melbourne-based clubs.

The 22-year-old had a delayed start to the season due to injury, and then was dropped from the AFL side after just four games due to him struggling to adapt to a half-forward role.

Hewett, a midfielder by trade, tallied just three disposals in a round-six loss to Fremantle then only eight possessions in a round-eight defeat to Richmond before being axed.

Man killed in Transperth bus crash identified as Banksia Grove father

A 61-year-old man who died after a Transperth bus crashed into a tree in Wanneroo on Thursday has been identified as Banksia Grove father Rooney Taua.

Taua was one of eight people, including the bus’ driver, who were hospitalised following the crash on Joondalup Drive about 11am on Thursday.

A 59-year-old woman was being treated for critical injuries in Royal Perth Hospital, while the 56-year-old bus driver was taken to the same hospital for treatment for his injuries.

Taua was rushed to Joondalup Health Campus with serious injuries, but a WA Police spokesperson confirmed on Friday morning the man had died in hospital.

A fundraiser started by a relative of Taua’s daughter said the tragedy unfolded on “what should have been an ordinary morning commute to work”.

Don’t want to watch the World Cup in a pub? Head to Northbridge anyway

By Michael Philipps

Sticking with today’s World Cup theme, the state government has also announced that matches from the tournament will be shown live at the Northbridge Piazza on a big screen.

Similar to the way recent Matildas and Socceroos matches have been broadcast live at Federation Square in Melbourne, the broadcast aims to attract thousands of viewers to Northbridge in a bid to support local businesses and restaurants.

Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti said the plan was part of a state government partnership with the City of Perth.

“We know that watching the world game together is a great part of the World Cup, and we have in Western Australia supporters of every team that’s playing,” she said.

Stay a little longer: Special liquor licences allow WA venues to stay open for World Cup

By Michael Philipps

Special licences will be available for West Australian venues to stay open and screen the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is set to kick off across North America on June 9.

Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia joined Sport Minister Rita Saffioti and Australian Hotels Association WA chief executive at the Brass Monkey in Northbridge early on Friday to make the announcement – and pour a few beers for the cameras.

Under the plans, the Director of Liquor Licensing will consider applications from venues which want to stay open for live broadcasts of the soccer – sorry, football – matches played in Canada, the US and Mexico.

Of course, long-suffering sports fans in Australia know all too well that being on the other end of the world means staying up late (or getting up early) to watch the biggest games as they happen.

The sauna proposal that could bring the heat to an iconic Cottesloe lookout

By Indigo Lemay-Conway

Cottesloe locals could soon be able to jump in a sauna before their ocean dip if a new plan for the roof of the North Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club gets the tick of approval.

The application from Alchemy Saunas is currently out for community consultation to gauge whether locals back the proposal, to be built on a space atop the NCSLSC which is currently used for seating by residents and visitors.

Details about the project shared on the Town of Cottesloe website show the single-storey sauna is set to be built on the northern boundary of the ski shed roof.

The sauna will only enclose 33 per cent of the roof area, with the remaining space designed for “public access and uninterrupted ocean views.”

Alchemy Saunas shared the proposal to its social media this week. It would be the company’s 11th sauna across Perth – the latest project in Burswood is still under way.

Busselton man charged over state forest bushfire

By

A joint investigation by the WA Police arson squad and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions has led to charges being laid against a Busselton man over a bushfire in a South West forest.

The investigation began on the afternoon of Friday, May 22, when a department spotter plane patrolling dense bushland noticed smoke from an area south of Cundinup West Road, in the Jarrahwood State Forest.

As the pilot circled the area, they allegedly spotted a vehicle nearby, and police were notified after the pilot relayed the information back via radio.

“Later that day, police intercepted the vehicle on Vasse Highway in Yoongarillup resulting in a 49-year-old man being charged with allegedly setting fire to 12 grass trees,” a WA Police spokesperson said.

Broome man to face court on child abuse material charges

By

A Broome man is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court today accused of purchasing child abuse material from the Philippines.

Australian Federal Police charged the 45-year-old after a tip-off from the Philippines National Police, who had been conducting their own investigation into the suspected sale and distribution of child abuse material.

Philippines police allegedly came across communications between an Australian phone number and the target of their investigation and notified the AFP, which allegedly traced the number to the Broome man.

Federal police were waiting for the man when he arrived at Perth Airport from a trip to the Philippines in February.
