Three rushed to hospital after four-way crash on Gympie Road
Three people were rushed to hospital after a four-way crash on one of Brisbane’s busiest roads during the peak hour on Wednesday morning.
Three cars and a motorcycle were involved in the crash just before 8.30am on Gympie Road, near Kedron Street, in Kedron.
The 46-year-old male motorcycle rider suffered life-threatening injuries, while two women, one in her 20s and one in her 80s, incurred potentially life-threatening injuries.
A group of passers-by banded together to lift one of the cars off the rider in the minutes following the collision.
Mick Richardson, who was among the group, told Nine it was an easy decision to help.
“As Aussies, if you see someone in need, you’re going to run to it,” he said.
“Poor bloke is in a bit of strife – [it’s] human nature, you just run to him and try to help him.”
All three people injured in the crash were taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
The younger woman suffered head injuries, while the woman in her 80s had chest pain and may have suffered a medical episode before the crash.
A woman in her 50s suffered minor injuries and declined transport to hospital.
Traffic lights at the major intersection of Gympie Road and Rode Road were turned off following the crash, with police directing the significant amount of backed-up traffic.
Drivers heading towards the city experienced major delays on Gympie Road, with traffic still queuing at 10am from the site of the crash all the way to Westfield Chermside, about 2½ kilometres away.
