BMW split in two, powerlines downed by fiery western Sydney car crash

A man is lucky to be alive after his BMW was torn in two in a fiery crash in south-western Sydney which brought down a power pole and left wreckage strewn for hundreds of metres.

One lane of the Hume Highway westbound remained closed at Villawood until just before 7am on Monday after the collision on Sunday night closed the whole road for four hours.

After hitting the power pole, snapping it in two and downing powerlines, the rear of the split BMW sedan hit a Toyota Corolla travelling in the other direction.

The rest of the wrecked BMW came to a halt in flames about 200 metres from the crash site, NSW Police said.

A 24-year-old man driving the BMW escaped the wreckage and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital with burns and suspected fractures.

Another man, 48, driving the Corolla hit by the wreckage, was taken to Liverpool Hospital for assessment.

Police are investigating the crash and have appealed for any dashcam or CCTV footage from the area.

In a separate crash on the state’s North Coast, a woman died after a car crashed into a power pole north-west of Coffs Harbour about 10.45pm on Sunday.

A second woman in the car suffered leg and pelvis injuries. She was taken to hospital along with two men, including the driver.
